ABOUT MAINE COONS
The Maine Coon is the largest domesticated cat breed and was first recognized as a specific breed in the state of Maine where it still named the official state cat. Native to the United States it is characterized by its 'mane' on the chest, rectangular body, powerful bone structure and a two layer coat that is rougher on the outside than it is on the inside. Their tails are traditionally long and bushy. They come in a great assortment of colors at pedigree standard, and are truly the "Gentle Giants" that they are nicknamed for their friendly, gentle and almost dog-like personalities. These cats have a lumbering stride and are sure to surprise any guests you have with their presence.
HISTORY
The true history of the Maine Coon is hidden by myth, folklore, and legend. No one knows how they made it over to the Americas. However, the generally accepted belief among breeders is that the Maine Coon is a descendant of simple local short-haired domestic cats and local long-haired breeds brought overseas by English seafarers or even 11th century Norsemen. The connection to Norsemen here is due to the resemblance Maine Coons have to the Norwegian Forest Cat. MCs were exceedingly popular by the 19th century, the breed was thought to have gone extinct by the 1950s - due to their loss in popularity in the 20th century - but through perseverance of breeders these cats are once again top contenders in popularity around the world.
